It is not often that you will see sequels to games from NES, SNES, or Genesis actually be good.  Well Maximo isn’t just for all time gamers either.  Anyone can play it.  I have to admit the game is rough, hard, and annoying in many places, but after seeing games like Jax and Daxter and Klonoa 2 we really need an old school game.  This is a great game to show old school games haven’t died out yet and are still very good.

This game is a kind of sequel and revived version of the NES one.  I mean Capcom didn’t just pick out any old NEs game, it picked out the game that needed to be revived as it has been forgotten. At first this game was actually meant to be released for N64 a while back, but as N64 was dying out, it was decided for PS2 instead. The story behind this game is that Maximo goes out as a traditional good knight to fight some warriors. Upon returning he sees that his kingdom is not so good. The king has now died and Achilles has taken over. Achilles has also taken Maximo’s girl.  Then Achilles kills Maximo and The Reaper in Hell makes a deal with him.  Maximo has to do a bunch of stuff to stop Achilles and then Maximo can get revenge at Achilles. This game is actually a nice lengthy game taken up to 20 hours to beat and then again, it might be best to master it by playing it again!

Now on to the actually game. Maximo is kind of based on old games as it is harder to save. There are 5 worlds and then the boss. Therefore, there are only a few saving spots and checkpoints which will frustrate many players. Also when you die you either start over from the last place saved or you will go on and have to pay the Grim Reaper dude some death coins which are hard to collect. The more you die the more you have to pay so try not to die too much. It is also annoying when you are about to win, but then all of a sudden you die.  Losing health is also very easy in this game. After getting hit you will slowly lose armor until you are bear to the boxers. Then after getting again a few times you will die.

One of the bad things about this game is the camera. You can move the camera a little for where you want it, but when fighting sometimes the camera movement is so slow that after getting hit the camera will finally come. It isn’t that bad, but might get a little frustrating. The worst that can happen is when you have one hit left you don’t even see the enemy coming and bam you’re dead without the camera checking you!

Some things that are cool are your attacks and weapons. It is nicely laid out. You have first your normal weapons, but then special power ups.  By the end of the game you could get as many as 7 of them. Here is one an example of one of them: Mask of Sorrow has you have 20 seconds of invincibility, which rocks.  Now i think I have talked about everything except for bosses.  The bosses are disappointing rather easy on my behalf.  I mean I was expecting big stuff form the bosses, but all I get is your average Joe-Shmoe Boss, not that I am complaining since you do lose less lives!

For the sound. The weird thing is I absolutely loved and adored the music of the game, but when coming to voices and sound effects I didn’t like.  The voices were nice in CG’s and were believable, but Maximo himself never ever really talks. Except for a few things he yells when attacking there is nothing else from him. The music on the other hand is very nice.  There is not much to say about it either.

The graphics aren’t the bets I have seen.  I mean nowadays the PS2 has such good graphcis CG’s aren’t needed but after you complete a place you get a good old CG! As a reward they are good, but the graphics could have been better. The best part for graphics was Maximo himself.  Very nicely laid out and put out. I couldn’t stop even stop looking at him.  The background graphics could have greatly been improved but hey who’s complaining!

So as a conclusion this is a very nice game that has many awesome features in it. For $50 this is really worth your risk if you like old school gaming.  That is my main complaint, the game does get very damn hard and even a bit repetitive. If you aren’t the type who can handle losing and starting over again or even have a hard time in a video game then back away and never play this game. Other then that I can’t say much except your missing alot!
